The Summer Camp for Education and Recreation, or, as it is better known, SCampER, is a special five-week program designed to help kids improve their reading, writing and language skills, while having fun. This program is open to students at John Maclure Community School and Clearbrook Elementary, as referred by their teachers and principals.
Our goal at SCampER is to see all children, regardless of where they start, reach or exceed the minimum reading level for their grade. For grade 1, that’s Level 16. For grade 2, Level 20, and for grade 3, Level 24. We strive to give children all the tools to succeed at school the next fall, and we’ve seen success doing it. For example, in 2013, Grade 1 children had an increase in their literacy scores of 53%.
But! They also had a great time. The best part of SCampER is that our focus on literacy does not sacrifice the fun of a good summer camp! All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so if Jack wants to shoot some hoops, we make it happen! SCampER focuses on literacy in the morning, and recreation in the afternoon, with plenty of playtime and fabulous out-trips. We at WACSS believe that learning should be fun, and with SCampER, it promises to be exactly that.
