A community school takes one of the largest and most under utilized public facilities, the public school, and increases the investment by making it open to the public on evenings, weekends, and during the holiday months for community activities. The community school provides a vehicle for the participation of neighborhood residents (including those without children in the school system) in the activities and efforts of their neighborhood school. The West Abbotsford Community School Society, a non-profit and charitable organization, was founded in 1996. In 2009, the society expanded to include seven more west side schools. WACSS includes Bondar, Clearbrook, John Maclure Community, Ten-Broeck and Terry Fox Elementary, Howe and Chief Dan George Middle & Mouat Secondary Schools.
